What CNSL is used for

  • Friction materials — brake linings and clutch facings
  • Phenolic resins and laminates
  • Paints, varnishes and coatings
  • Surfactants and specialty chemicals

Its most valuable derivative is cardanol. CNSL is extracted during shell oil extraction.

Handle with care

CNSL is caustic and can irritate skin — it is an industrial material handled with appropriate protection, not a food product.
